Snapchat to Roll Out Redesign

Snapchat is reportedly set to roll out a redesign of its app in mid-June by merging its Discover and Live Story features.

The resulting newsfeed will show preview images for certain channels, instead of brand logos, according to sources cited by Digiday. Users will also be able to subscribe to different publishers, creating a custom feed of content.

Snapchat’s Discover is a portal for more than a dozen traditional content producers, such as the Wall Street Journal, Food Network, and Cosmopolitan, to push their articles, pictures, and videos. The feature remains one of the least popular on the app, with just 9 percent of users saying Discover is what they like most about Snapchat, according to a survey released by Variety in March.

The app’s Live Stories feature is far more popular and is created by an internal publishing team that collects videos and pictures from users near certain news events, such as the World Cup or a presidential debate.

“The goal is to focus on content, rather than the brand for Discover going forward,” said the source. “They expect that this will increase readership since the content can draw in users that don’t have a relationship with the brand, per se.”

The app changes come as Snapchat has reportedly surpassed social media rival Twitter Inc. in its number of daily active users. More than 150 million users log into Snapchat each day compared to about 140 million users logging into Twitter each day, according to sources and an estimate cited by Bloomberg.
