THE MONEY: Broad, a philanthropist and art collector, got big boost this year from his trove of modern masterpieces and large AIG stake. Also rising were less sexy government securities and plain old cash investment vehicles. Many other investments continued to hold steady.

BUZZ: Angelenos got sneak peek at what lies beneath his Broad Museum’s avant garde cheese grater façade in February. Set to open in September, the museum will feature artwork from Broad’s personal collection, including chorus line of modern luminaries such as Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein, Ruscha, Warhol, Basquiat and Koons. The 120,000-square-foot Grand Avenue museum was supposed to open in 2014, but construction hiccups caused delays. The Broad Foundation and contractor Matt Construction sued German architectural firm Seele Inc. for delays in delivering on building’s striking shell; the suit is still pending. Broad continued to push for greater pay parity, supporting Mayor Eric Garcetti’s plan to raise L.A.’s minimum wage to $13.25. He and his wife, Edythe, gave $25 million to Michigan State University’s business school, from which he graduated in 1954, and $2 million to Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC.
