Shares in Cheesecake Factory Inc. surged nearly 9 percent Wednesday after activist investor Nelson Peltz acquired a 10 percent stake in the Calabasas-based casual dinning chain.

Bloomberg News reported that Peltz’s Trian Star Trust, a fund affiliated with Peltz’s Trian Fund Management LP, accumulated the stake and may add to it, a person with knowledge of the deal said.

Earlier this year, Peltz and some of his associates won board seats at HJ Heinz Co. and Wendy’s International Inc. after pressuring management to boost its earnings, mainly through the hedge fund Trian Fund Management.

Bloomberg also reported that the fund received approval from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to purchase shares of the restaurant chain today, but the purchase has not yet been made public.

While shares in virtually every other casual dinning chain in the sector hit new 52-week lows today, shares in Cheesecake Factory rebounded, adding 8.8 percent to $24.14. The stock hit a 52-week low early on in trading Wednesday.
