Nova Lifestyle, United Online Among Week’s Big Movers

The Los Angeles Business Journal’s index of the largest local public companies rose slightly for the week. The weighted LABJ index edged up less than 1 percent to close at 225, with gainers outpacing losers 85 to 64. Nine companies closed the week unchanged.

Among stocks trading above a dollar, Commerce furniture designer and manufacturer Nova LifeStyle Inc. was one of the week’s leading gainers. Shares rose 18 percent to close at $2.60 on Friday after the company announced additional purchase orders from Omaha’s Nebraska Furniture Mart, a subsidiary of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Last month, the company announced an expansion of its IKEA product line.

Woodland Hills internet service provider United Online Inc. also had a good week. Shares rose 14 percent to close at $15.91 after the company posted strong quarterly earnings.

Another Woodland Hills firm, internet advertising company ReachLocal Inc., was among the week’s losing stocks. Shares fell 10 percent to close the week at $3.23.
